How to Use a Weed Control Mat:
Prepare the Soil: Before laying down the weed mat, remove existing weeds, rocks, or debris from the soil. It’s best to do this when the soil is dry, so you can pull weeds up more easily.
Lay the Fabric: Roll out the weed control mat over the prepared soil. Overlap edges of the mat by a few inches to ensure that weeds can't grow between seams.
Secure the Mat: To keep the mat in place, you can secure it with landscape pins or staples, which are often sold specifically for this purpose. If using mulch, gravel, or rocks as a top layer, the weight of these materials will also help hold the mat in place.
Cut Holes for Plants: If you’re planting on top of the mat, use a utility knife or scissors to cut small “X” or “+” shaped slits for each plant. The fabric can then be folded back to plant the seeds or seedlings. You may also need to ensure that the slits are wide enough to allow the plants to grow without obstruction.
